Clerkship grades are primarily determined by your clinical evaluations and final exam score. However, your entire performance, including evaluator’s comments, acceptable completion of all requirements, participation during didactics and completion of e-learning activities, are reviewed and can contribute to your final grade.
2024-2025 Grading (effective 3/25/24)
Calculating Grades
CLINICAL Grade is calculated by:
- Finding the numeric average in the 14 different areas given by each evaluator.
- Combining this with each evaluator’s overall assessment (weighted 2/3 14-areas to 1/3 overall assessment)
- Each evaluator’s input is then weighted by the amount of time they spent with you, and these are then combined into a single clinical score.
- Specific comments are taken into account in calculating your clinical grade.
FINAL Overall Grade is calculated by:
- Your clinical score (50% of your grade comes from your clinical score)
- Your NBME score (20% of your grade comes from the exam)
- It is possible to pass the clerkship without passing the exam. Passing the exam is a graduation requirement.
- Each OCP score (10% each of the final grade)
- The CEX-7 score (10% of the final grade)
- Specific comments are taken into account.
Grade Challenges
Follow the below guidelines if you disagree with a clerkship or elective grade in psychiatry.
Policy
Students have the right to appeal their grades and/or evaluation comments in the event that they feel the performance was based on inaccurate information and/or included comments that were inappropriate or insufficient based on feedback received during the course. If the student is not satisfied after the clerkship director’s review, the student may appeal to the Grade Appeal Committee (see linkLinks to an external site.).
Circumstances in which a challenge is appropriate include:
- An apparent mathematical error in computing your final grade.
- A technical problem with the evaluation process..
- Discrepancy between the feedback you received and the evaluation that was submitted.
Circumstances in which a challenge will not be entertained include:
- Performance on the exam or the weight of exam.
- Disagreement with our grading process (e.g., how the clinical GPA is calculated and weighted).
- Disagreement with an evaluator’s assessment of your performance.
- Disparity between the final comments vs. final grade.

Please contact the department administrator Margie Trenary (trenam@uw.edu) for a grade review (step 1) before you submit an official grade challenge to the department. The grade challenge form must be submitted within four weeks after your grade was posted.
