The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Washington School of Medicine (UWSOM) offers core clerkships in psychiatry, electives and advanced patient care opportunities for medical students attending the UWSOM and visiting medical students from other institutions. All of our psychiatry clerkships give students the opportunity to work with some of the most interesting and challenging patients in medicine. An important goal is to increase students’ comfort level in working with individuals with psychiatric illness, allowing them to become more effective physicians.

Core clerkships in psychiatry, electives, and advanced patient care opportunities
Patient Care Phase Clerkship
The UWSOM core psychiatry clerkship (offered to UWSOM students only) provides a thorough introduction to psychiatry through supervised patient encounters, clinical teaching and a structured didactic program. This required, six-week clerkship provides inpatient and (when available) outpatient experiences introducing students to clinical Psychiatry.
Electives & Advanced Patient Care
Fourth year medical students can take a variety of elective psychiatry clerkships. Programs are offered throughout the WWAMI region and may be two to four weeks in duration depending on elective type. Elective offerings include sub-internships in psychiatry, consult-liaison psychiatry, additions programs, and opportunities in child, geriatric and emergency psychiatry.
Opportunities for Visiting Students
Fourth year elective clerkships are also offered for approved medical students visiting from other medical schools. Elective courses are 2-to-4 weeks and are available in various psychiatry specialties with a wide range of offerings to choose from.
